Alpha Delta Pi was founded on
May 15, 1851, at Wesleyan Female
College in Macon, Georgia. The
original name of the sorority
was the "Adelphean Society." The
word "Adelphean" is derived from
the Greek word meaning sister.
We hold the distinction of being
the FIRST secret society in the
world for college women and is
regarded as the "First and
Finest". As the mother of
today's sorority system, it is
only fitting that our founding
took place at the first college
in the world chartered to grant
degrees to women. Our name
changed to Alpha Delta Phi in
1905 when the sorority went
national. Because of continued
confusion with a men's
fraternity with the same name,
however, it was changed for the
last time to Alpha Delta Pi in
1913.
We take much pride in the
fact that principles and rituals
of Alpha Delta Pi are the same
as that of our founders in 1851.
The qualifications for
membership in this sorority have
remained unchanged through the
years ~ scholarship, high
principles of behavior, and true
friendships.
